The notice was posted long ago. You remember checking the website and seeing a delivery update. Now the matter is moving forward, the advocate asks for proof, and the tracking page shows no useful result.
You still have an article number. You do not have the page you saw.
If old Speed Post tracking is unavailable, look for the booking receipt, saved tracking, proof of delivery, returned packet and any obtainable postal records. A broken or empty tracking result does not, by itself, prove that the article was never delivered or that every underlying record has been destroyed.
This is an illustrative file-retrieval problem. The useful habit is to preserve records while the postal journey is still visible.
Do not assume a universal tracking expiry date
It is common to see claims that India Post deletes every tracking record after 60 or 90 days. Do not build your evidence plan around an unverified universal period.
Public website availability, internal retention and complaint deadlines are different things. An unavailable result could also reflect a system issue, an incorrect number or a change in the tracking interface.
Record what you searched and when. Check the article number against the original receipt before concluding that an old record is missing. If the website is temporarily unavailable, save that fact separately from your evidence of delivery.
Start with the documents you already control
| Record | What it can help establish | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Booking receipt | Article number, booking date and recorded service | Matter folder, dashboard or accounts file |
| Saved tracking | The postal events displayed when captured | Downloads, case archive or authorised staff records |
| POD or acknowledgement | Available delivery particulars | Postal records or earlier downloads |
| Returned packet | Endorsements and external condition | Physical matter file or return-mail register |
| Final notice and dispatch instruction | Which document was intended for that recipient | Approved document folder and correspondence |
Check email attachments and the files held by the person who booked the item. A receipt may have been filed with the payment voucher rather than the notice. Keep a list of what is missing so the search remains focused.
Ask India Post for the record rather than guessing
Use the official contact and grievance routes to ask about the article. Provide the number, booking office, booking date, sender and addressee details, and a receipt copy where available.
Ask what delivery information or proof can still be supplied. Keep the request, acknowledgement and response, even if the response says the requested material is unavailable.
India Post's complaint guidance currently specifies a 60-day transaction window for service complaints. That is not a statement that all tracking is deleted on day 61. Check the appropriate route promptly rather than assuming that a later records request will succeed.
Your advocate can assess whether a formal request or court-directed production is appropriate if an important record cannot be obtained voluntarily.

Where Section 63 of the BSA fits
Section 63 of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023 governs the relevant computer-output route for electronic records. Its certificate identifies the record, production method, devices and statutory conditions. The Schedule provides Part A for the party and Part B for an expert; signatures and scope need proper attention.
Preserving a screenshot and meeting admissibility requirements are separate tasks. A certificate does not make an inaccurate record true or prove everything about the underlying delivery. Someone who captures a website should distinguish that capture process from the postal system they do not control.
The BSA commenced on 1 July 2024. Section 170 preserves the earlier Evidence Act for proceedings covered by its savings provision. That is why Section 65B may still arise. Have counsel check the applicable regime rather than simply renaming an old form.
Save the evidence without changing it
When tracking is available, save a complete capture showing the article number and event history. Record the URL, capture date, time, timezone and person who captured it. Preserve the downloaded or captured original alongside any readable print copy.
If a page is long, make sure the last event is included. A screenshot that crops out the article number is difficult to connect to the receipt. A screenshot that shows only “delivered” may omit the date that matters.
Use descriptive filenames and keep a second secure copy. Restrict access where the record contains client or recipient details.
A simple office preservation routine
At booking, save the receipt and connect it to the approved notice. During the postal journey, check for exceptions that need attention. When delivery or return is recorded, save the complete outcome and any available POD.
Close the dispatch task only when the matter folder contains the records your office expects. An updated dashboard is convenient, but it should not be the sole place where important evidence lives.
For repeat senders, assign one person to reconcile article numbers and another to check exceptions. These are operational checks, not additional legal formalities.
What an archive cannot repair
If no tracking capture was saved, do not create a page that looks like an old India Post result. A later summary should be labelled with its actual preparation date and sources.
If a file was edited, preserve the versions and explain the change. If all that remains is a booking receipt, give that record to your advocate and identify the missing material honestly. Other evidence and applicable presumptions may still need consideration.
Questions about old delivery proof
Is a tracking screenshot always mandatory
No single record is universally mandatory for every case. Its usefulness and the required proof depend on the proceeding and the facts.
Can Chitthiwale recover any old India Post record
Do not assume that it can. Download the records available for your order and seek missing postal information through the appropriate channel.
Can I prepare the certificate later
Ask your advocate about the correct procedure, signatories and timing. Preserve source files and capture details now so the later exercise has an accurate foundation.
